Read:  2 Chronicles 7:14 and Matthew 22:34-40

Reflect:    Throughout Judeo-Christian history, God has always required two things:  that we fear, love and trust God above all else, and that we love and care for the neighbor.  Not even King Solomon in all his wisdom and wealth and glory was exempt from this.  God’s people – especially those in positions of power and authority – are called to do justice, love mercy, and walk with humility before God. 

As we celebrate our nation’s 250^th anniversary,  let us give thanks for the abundance of God’s blessings.  Let us recommit ourselves to the care and well-being of every neighbor.  Let us pray for our leaders, that they serve all people with humility and wisdom, and have the courage and will to work for peace in our land and throughout the world.   

Prayer:   Sovereign God, your Son Jesus lived within the structures of society even as he spoke truth to those in power and challenged systems of oppression.  Empower us to be courageous disciples and responsible citizens.  Grant that our life in the public realm be grounded in love for our neighbors, care for the most vulnerable in our midst, and respect for the common life we share, following the example of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen.  (from All Creation Sings, p. 50.  ©2020 Augsburg Fortress, used by permission.)
